China

1839-1842- Opium War. Hong Kong ceded to Britain.

1842-1852- “Unequal Treaties” signed with France and the U.S.

1851-1864 - Taipeng rebellion

1856-1860- Two additional wars against England and France.

1858 - Lands north of the Amur River to Russia.

1894-1895- China defeated in war versus Japan

1898 - Hundred Days reform movement. Ends with Empress Dowager seizing power.

1898-1900- Boxer rebellion

1905 - Founder of the Kuomintang (National People’s Party, or KMT)

1908 - Empress dowager died. National assembly formed.

1911 - Nationalist revolt.

1912 - Last Qing Emperor abdicated. Republic formed.

India

1784-1857- “Dual Control”

1818 - English defeat Hindu Maratha kingdom.

1829 - English ban suttee

1833 - Hindu religious reformer, Ram Mohan Roy died.

1835 - English introduce English-style education into India.

Eventually creates western-educated elite.

1853 - First Indian railway built

1857 - Sepoy Mutiny. End of the Mughal dynasty

1885 - Hindu Indian National Congress established.

1906 - All-India Muslim League formed

Japan

1842 - Japan agrees to provision foreign ships in need.

1853 - Commodore Perry (U.S.) forces Japan to open its ports.

1853-1868- Japanese set up western-style manufacturing facilities.

1860 - First Japanese steamship crosses the Pacific. Japan takes control of Korea

1868 - Meiji Restoration. End of the Tokugawa Shoguate

1889 - Western-style Parliament est. (German model)

1870’s-1914 - Japan industrialized.

1894 - Japan seized Formosa (Taiwan)

1902 - Anglo-Japanese alliance

1904-1906- Japan defeats Russia in Manchuria.
